A disposal that hums but doesn't spin has a jammed impeller — a bone fragment, a small utensil, or a hard food item is blocking rotation. Locate the hex socket on the center bottom of the disposal unit. Insert a 1/4-inch hex key (Allen wrench) and work it back and forth until the impeller breaks free. Then press the red reset button on the bottom of the unit. This fixes 80% of humming-but-not-grinding calls without a service visit. If the disposal still doesn't work after a jam reset, the motor may have failed.
A disposal leaking from the bottom means the internal motor seal has failed. This is generally not worth repairing — the seal is inside the motor housing, and repair cost approaches the cost of a new unit. We carry replacement InSinkErator and Moen units on the truck and can swap the disposal in 45–60 minutes, including proper flange sealing.
