Dryer spins but produces no heat? Takes two or three cycles to dry a load? Squealing or thumping mid-cycle? We repair gas and electric dryers across Rocky Mount and Eastern NC — heating elements, igniters, thermal fuses, drum rollers, belts, and complete vent duct rebuilds. Most dryer calls are completed in under 90 minutes.
The dryer is often the last appliance homeowners get repaired — it's inconvenient when it doesn't work, but it's not the emergency a failed refrigerator is. That calculation changes when you realize a dryer that takes three cycles to dry one load has typically doubled your utility bill and is running a blocked duct that the NFPA identifies as the leading cause of appliance fires in US homes. We take dryer calls seriously for that reason.
We carry full dryer repair inventory on both trucks: heating elements for electric dryers, igniter and gas valve coil packs for gas dryers, thermal fuses for both, cycling thermostats, drum rollers, drum belts, and blower wheels. For the brands that dominate Rocky Mount's housing stock — Whirlpool, Maytag, Samsung, LG — our first-visit fix rate on no-heat calls is very high. We also carry 40-foot flexible duct cleaning kits for full vent rebuilds, because clearing the mechanical failure without addressing the duct blockage that caused it means the thermal fuse will blow again.

A dryer that runs but produces no heat is our most common dryer service call. The diagnosis differs between gas and electric dryers, but the starting point is the same: is the symptom complete lack of heat, or is the dryer heating but not efficiently? Complete lack of heat is almost always a failed safety component or heating component. Insufficient heat is usually a blocked vent duct.
Electric Dryer No Heat — Heating Element: The heating element is a coiled resistance wire inside a housing mounted to the exhaust duct. When it fails — typically by the wire breaking at a point of stress — the element produces no heat at all. You can often see the break by removing the back panel and inspecting the element coil. Test with a multimeter: no continuity means replace. Heating element replacement: $135–$215 all in. We stock elements for Whirlpool, Maytag, Samsung, LG, and GE.
Electric and Gas Dryer No Heat — Thermal Fuse: The thermal fuse is a one-time safety device that blows when the dryer exhaust exceeds a safe temperature. Once blown, it cannot be reset — it must be replaced. The critical detail: the thermal fuse blows because of excessive heat, which is almost always caused by a blocked vent duct. Replacing the fuse without clearing the duct means the new fuse will blow again. We always inspect and clear the vent duct on any thermal fuse repair. Thermal fuse replacement: $95–$145. Vent cleaning adds $95–$145 if needed.
Gas Dryer No Heat — Igniter and Valve Coil Pack: Gas dryers use a glow-bar igniter to light the burner. When it fails, the burner won't light and you get no heat. The gas valve coil pack — three or four solenoid coils that open and close the gas valve — is the second most common gas dryer failure. When one coil in the pack fails, the valve can't open. We replace the full coil pack whenever any individual coil fails, because the remaining coils are typically at the same wear point. Igniter replacement: $145–$215. Valve coil pack: $135–$195.
Dryer Vent Blockage — The Hidden Fire Hazard: A lint-blocked dryer vent duct is the underlying cause of a majority of thermal fuse failures, and it is the NFPA's documented leading cause of residential dryer fires. Symptoms: clothes take two or more cycles to dry, the dryer cabinet is hot to the touch, the outdoor vent cap doesn't show strong airflow during operation, and you may smell a burning lint odor. We carry a 40-foot flexible duct cleaning kit and perform full duct rebuilds — including repairing kinked or crushed duct sections — on every dryer call where duct condition is suspect. Vent cleaning: $95–$145.
Drum Roller and Belt Failures: A squealing, squeaking, or thumping noise during the spin cycle indicates worn drum rollers (the wheels that support the drum from below) or a worn drum support belt. Both are straightforward repairs on most dryer models. Drum roller replacement typically requires accessing the drum, which means some disassembly, but a trained technician can complete it in 60–75 minutes. Drum roller set replacement: $125–$195. Belt replacement: $95–$155.
Gas dryer repairs are slightly more expensive on average than electric dryer repairs because gas-specific components — igniters, valve coil packs, and gas line fittings — cost more than their electric equivalents. However, gas dryer operating costs are lower over time, so a well-maintained gas dryer is generally worth repairing. All of our technicians are trained and experienced on gas appliances. We do not send electrical-only technicians to gas dryer calls.
The single best thing you can do to extend your dryer's life and prevent fires: clean the vent duct annually. Clean the lint screen before every load. Vacuum the lint screen housing every few months — lint builds up in the housing behind the screen and restricts airflow. Check the outdoor vent cap in spring and fall for bird nests (a shockingly common problem in Eastern NC). If your dryer is more than 5 years old and has never had a vent cleaning, schedule one. See our dryer not heating guide for the full diagnostic sequence you can run before calling us.
These ranges come from our 2024–2025 invoice data for Eastern NC service calls — not inflated national estimates.
